Looking for a Soldier’s Prayer? You need look no further than Psalm 91. It has been the prayer of choice through many wars.
Soldiers Prayer Testimony 1:
This morning I read an article about Jimmy Stewart going to war with a copy of Psalm 91 that his dad sent him. Psalm 91 had been Dad’s Soldier’s Prayer in WWI and he assured “Jim Boy” that this Psalm prayer would keep fear and anxiety at bay while Jimmy did his soldiering. Stewart was to pray it daily and Dad would do the same. Stewart returned home, a Colonel in the Army Air Corps, having flown twenty missions. In regard to his Soldier’s Prayer, Jimmy said he carried all the men in his command in that prayer, lay them in the Lord’s hands for safe keeping.
Soldier’s Prayer Testimony 2:
Once while doing a CD singing at Berean Christian store in Bakersfield, I had an elderly woman approach the table. Her face was shining. ”Psalm 91, the Soldier’s Prayer!,” she exclaimed. Then she went on the tell how she had prayed Psalm 91 every day while her husband fought in Europe during WWII. ”Came home unharmed and all the men in his unit as well.” How many family members connected to that unit were praying the Soldier’s prayer too? We will never know. But what we do know…those of us who pray…is that praying this Scripture prayer is powerful stuff.
If you are going to pray, and apparently you are, then you want to pray as effectively as possible. Psalm 91 has become know as the Soldiers Prayer because of its effectiveness. Here is some explanation of that effectiveness.
Soldier’s Prayer Power Principle One
All words have power, your words, my words. God’s Word carries so much more power that He can say,
For as the rain comes down, and the snow from Heaven and do not return there, but water the earth, and make it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower and bread to the eater, so shall My word be that goes forth from my mouth. It shall not return to me void, but accomplish what I please, and it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it (Isaiah 55:10-11NKJ).
So God sends this powerful word to you with Psalm 91, the ultimate Soldier’s prayer, and He promises that these words will accomplish what He intended. Heaven is involved in your prayer! How reassuring is that? Recall how God said to Jeremiah in Chapter 1 verse 9 that He had put His word in Jeremiah’s mouth. Then in verse 11 He states that He is watching over His word to perform it. Let God put this Soldier’s Prayer in your mouth and watch over this Word to perform it.
Soldier’s Power Principle Two
Praying Scripture builds faith. We know from Scripture: Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God (Romans 10:17). Consequently, as your heart hears your own voice proclaiming God’s Word in Psalm 91, faith grows in you. You may not feel it at first, but give it time. This works!
Now your faith is increasing and look at what faith can do: Matthew 17:20 – If you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, “Move from here to there!” and it will move and nothing will be impossible to you.
Nothing will be impossible to you! Continue praying your Soldier’s Prayer and let faith flourish. This will impact your life for all the years to come.
Soldier’s Prayer Power Principle 3
A considerable amount of this impact will result from your mind being renewed. Look at what Paul says to the Romans in Chapter 12 verse 2: And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind… Praying Scripture not only builds faith, but in the process changes your thinking, renews your mind. You are transformed as a result. Your behavior is different.
How does this behavioral change relate to the Soldier’s Prayer? Your thinking is more faith-filled, more confident. Can you think more clearly in this state? Yes! Can you make better decisions, wiser moves? Yes! Will all this help keep you safer? Of course!
